Where to find us
We follow the surfing seasons, so base ourselves wherever the waves are good. Surfing seasons in Sri Lanka are as follows:
• May – September: East Coast (Arugam Bay, Pottuvil Point, Visce Point, Peanut Farm, Okanda, Crocodile Rock)
• November - April: South West Coast (Hikkaduwa, Midigama, Plantation, Weligama, Mirissa, Polhena, Kabalana)
We generally operate out for Hikkaduwa (west coast) and Arugam Bay (east coast) and travel from there to the best surf breaks.
Depending on the weather and the season, there are many beaches along Sri Lanka’s west, south and east coasts that are worth a visit, incorporating a side trip or two to some local sights on the way back to your hotel. Wherever you decide to head, you’ll be riding waves no time!
At the moment we are running classes from outside Funky De Bar at main point in Narigama, Hikkaduwa. Sometimes we head down the coast to Weligama (on the south coast) for the day, where the waves are a little easier to catch.
Hikkaduwa area and surf forecast
Hikkaduwa is famous for its laid back vibe. With beautiful white palm fringed beaches, a fantastic A-frame (both left and right) reef break, coral reef sanctuary, plenty of beachside bars... and all the tourist facilities one could hope for, Hikkaduwa is the most popular shoreline destination in Sri Lanka.
Hikkaduwa is located only 2.5 hours south of Colombo, the nation's capital, and about 20 mins north of the magical UNESCO World Heritage Listed Galle Fort and sleepy Unawatuna bay, which makes it convenient for holiday makers with a limited timeframe and desire to seek out cultural pursuits as well as bask in Sri Lanka's natural beauty.
Arugam Bay area and surf forecast
Arugam Bay is a sleepier paradise. Until recently, with the end of the 26 year civil war in Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay has been a destination for more adventurous travellers or keen surfers. Now, as security concerns ease, Arugam Bay shines as a perfect getaway for both the adventurous and those seeking a bit of peace and quiet in an idyllic setting.
A clean long (300-500m, yes long) right point break, over a sandy bottom, Arugam Bay's surf can reach over a pumping 8ft in high season (May to September). This is why surfers from all over the world return year after year! Nearby Peanut Farm, 6km to the south of Arugam Bay, also has a quality right point break over a sandy bottom.
Arugam an off day, or are you looking for something a little more learner friendly, Pottivil Point or Visce Point nearby have smaller, more manageable waves.
In addition to the awesome surfing, Arugam Bay has a more pristine beauty which can be explored... Head inland only 15 to 20 mins and your will find roaming elephants, colourful birdlife and be exposed to the fascinating cultural mix of Muslim, Hindu and Sinhalese ethnic groups who live in the area. Take a detour and safari with elephants, deep and leopards in Yala national park and stay the night in dreamy Tissamaharama, or marvel at the fanatics and theatrics of both Buddhist and Hindu worshippers at the holy site of Kataragama.
